The state Americans relocated to more than any other in 2023 amid Midwest exodus

A study has revealed the most sought-after US state for movers, as people sought to be nearer loved ones and have a lifestyle change.
United Van Lines’ annual National Movers Study, which tracks the firm’s data for migration patterns found that more people moved to Vermont than any other state with 65% of inbound movers.
It marks the third year in a row that the Green Moutain State has clinched the top spot.
According to the data, almost 30 percent made the decision as they wanted to be closer to family, while another 20 percent were simply looking for a change of lifestyle.
In second was Washington, D.C., with the data showing that 63 percent of moves in the capital were inbound and South Carolina were inbound.

The figures suggest that states such as North Carolina, South Carolina, and Alabama are seeing a continued rise in popularity.
The study’s results appear correspond with a pattern of people primarily looking for moves to less expensive metro areas in which they’ll have less competition in the crowded housing market.
The trend has gathered steam in recent years due to as housing has become less affordable, according to a Zillow report.
Zillow reported that the share of median household income needed to meet the cost of rent rose from 26.7 percent in November 2019 to 29.9 percent in November last year.
Meanwhile, the share of income to cover monthly mortgage costs for a typical home rose steeply from 22.7 percent to 38.6 percent for the same period.
According to the report, the trend of residents deciding to move away from the Midwest and West regions persisted in 2023.
For the sixth year in a row, New Jersey had the highest percentage for outbound moves, Michigan, Illinois, and California also seeing a large number of departures.
